Production potential and profitability of potato based crop sequence in tarai belt of Uttaranchal

Abstract

A field experiment with 300% cropping intensity was conducted for two consecutive years during 1997–98 and 1998–99 at Vegetable Research Centre, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar. Four crop sequences, viz. potato-okra-early paddy, potato-cowpea-maize, potato-maize-cowpea and wheat-cowpea-paddy were replicated four times in randomized block design. The results showed that potato-cowpea-maize was the best crop sequence with the potato equivalent yield (PEY) of 525.15 q/ha followed by potato-maize-cowpea (490.83 q/ha). Economic analysis showed that potato cowpea-maize-sequence gave the highest net return of Rs. 57246/ha/year, followed by potato-maize-eowpea sequence (Rs. 54556/ha/year). However, the highest land use efficiency (92%) was in wheat-cowpea-paddy sequence followed by potato-okra-early paddy (80%). The highest production was recorded in potato-cowpea-maize (187 kg/ha/day). Among the potato based crop sequences, tuber yield was higher when it followed cowpea as compared to its planting after maize-crop sequence which was more remunerative as compared to wheat-cowpea-paddy crop sequence.
