The effects of abscisic acid and gibberellic acid on growth and development of the potato in relation to photoperiod

Abstract

The plants of a qualitative short day potato variety, Kufri Sindhuri, growing under non-inductive long days (LD) were sprayed every day with abscisic acid (ABA) of 20 mg/l concentration for 15 days commencing from 70 days after emergence. ABA was not effective in inducing tuber formation under LD. It was neither inhibitory to plant height nor counteracted the increase in height caused by simultaneously applied gibberellic acid (GA3) (10 mg/l). Similar treatment for 5 consecutive days from about 30 days after emergence with different concentrations of GA2 resulted in highest tuber yield at mg/l and tuber number at 10 mg/l under 8hr days (SD) Tuberization was inhibited by GA2 at 500 mg/l.
