Cobalt chloride, an ethylene inhibitor, was used in culture medium to study its effect on potato microplant growth during micropropagation. Incorporation of cobalt chloride up to 50 mM in the medium did not have any significant effect on microplant growth and development. However, cobalt chloride at ≥100 mM concentrations was associated with a decline in microplant root length and fresh mass. This study also suggests that cobalt chloride may not be an essential micronutrient for in vitro cultures of potato.
