An osmotin-like gene has been cloned and sequenced from the late blight resistant wild potato species Solanum chacoense. Expression of the cloned gene in Escherichia coli resulted in a new protein of expected size whose toxicity against Phytophthora infestans is being evaluated in vitro. The gene has also been sub-cloned in a binary vector for future use in Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of potato.
