The experiments were carried out during the years 1975–76 and 1976–77 to find out optimum dose, time of application and desirability of top dressing in case of high doses of nitrogenous fertilizer application on three different varieties of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) namely, ‘Kufri Jyoti’, ‘Kufri Dewa’ and ‘Kufri Sindhuri’. ‘Kufri Jyoti’ showed faster emergence, vigorous growth and tuberization in the beginning but afterwards ‘Kufri Sindhuri’ showed better performance than both the varieties, while ‘Kufri Jyoti’ responded poorly, for the characters like plant height, fresh and dry weight of shoot. Final yield was also maximum in ‘Kufri Sindhuri’ followed by ‘Kufri Dewa’ and ‘Kufri Jyoti’. Nitroaen @ 150 kg/ha gave maximum yield. Top dressing did not prove beneficial in any of the varieties used.
