Seed production technology of potato (var. Kufri Chandramukhi) as influenced by seed tuber size and plant density

Abstract

Studies were conducted at the Central Potato Research Station, Patna for three years (1976–78) to compare three seed-tuber sizes viz. 25–35 mm (30g), 35–45 mm (50g) and 45–55 mm (85g) within 5 intra-row spacings of 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 cm in 60 cm. A positive influence of bigger seed size with proportionate reduction in spacing on yield was seen. The highest yield was obtained with tubers of 45–55 mm planted at 60 × 25 cm distance, and medium size of tubers (35–45 mm) planted at a closer spacing of 60 × 20 cm. In general, greater frequency of medium sized tubers occurred by planting large sized seed tubers. Maximum yields were realised by planting medium and large sized seed tubers weighing on an average above 50 gm. Large seed tubers of Kufri Chandramukhi can, therefore, be advantageously recommended as an integral part of the seed-plot technique.
