Harvesting of potato crop with manual digging requires huge amount of labour. Bullock-drawn diggers at some places have been tried with improvements over the manual digging but due to certain short comings their operation could not become efficient. Tractor operated elevator digger though performs the operation efficiently but its cost of operation is high and secondly it is not suited to the small and medium holdings, besides its dependence on the conventional source of energy which are in acute short supply now a days. Flat throat type bullock drawn potato digger developed at Central Potato Research Institute performs the operation efficiently, suits to the small and medium holdings as well and its cost of operation is lowest as compared with other methods.
