The spore-balls, of Spongospora subterranea obtained from the pustules of the infected potato tubers, germinated under laboratory conditions in sterilized tap water by small germ-tubes forming zoosporangia in series upto 9 at 10°C and 4 at 15°C, releasing the swarm spores, which formed thick walled cysts under unfavourable corditions.
The tubers of three susceptible cvs. Kufri Chandramukhi, Kufri Kuber and Great Scot were successfully inocuclated under laboratory conditions with the swarm spores. Penetration takes place through the lenticels or directly through the tuber skin without any injury to the tuber.
