Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH) could be integrated with one of the popular bibliographic database known as IndCat. IndCat is a union catalogue of books, theses and serials of university libraries in India that provides bibliographic details of books, serials and theses available in Indian University Libraries. One of the components of IndCat is ‘theses ’database, which contains bibliographic records of Ph. D. theses on various subjects. LCSH covers universe of subjects and is also available in an open access. Hence, integration of LCSH could be done with data input worksheet of IndCat's ‘theses ’database. LCSH is available in RDF/XML and JSON format for bundle of terms and could be extracted from LCSH. It could also be stored in the local MySQL database with all relations. LCSH is transformed into a tabular structure in MySQL with all relationships and a search interface is provided to search terms and use it for indexing the theses records at the time of cataloguing. The article describes how LCSH can be integrated with ‘theses ’database. The experimental results showed that one could download number of terms with its relations in local database and using a search interface desired term can be searched. It is also showed that the integration of LCSH terms through local database with ‘theses ’data input worksheet will ease the work of cataloguer. An attempt has been made to explain the usefulness of LCSH in online databases and presents how the controlled vocabulary has been integrated with IndCat's ‘theses ’database.
