Telugu is one of the four major Dravidian languages, spoken by 8 crore people in Andhra Pradesh and the surrounding sates in South India. Telugu is a mellifluous language and known as the Italian of the East. The language has undergone many changes from the 11th century and its speakers have produced a rich literature. Research in the modern sense began in Telugu Language and literature with the establishment of the Andhra University at Visakhapatnam in 1936 with the formation of A.P. in 1956 and with the establishment of many universities in the state, research in Telugu language and literature began to bloosom.
The present paper attempts to study the research done at various universities in India and abroad during the period 1988–1997 on Telugu language and literature. In this process it examines the quantity of M.Phill and Ph.D. research conducted at each university, ranking study of the supervisors and the subjectwise research carried out. This analytical study provides an indication about the trend of research in the next millennium.
