Local Area Networks (LANs), which are defined as a collection of computers interconnected within a limited geographical area, such as a home, school, college, computer laboratory and library building, have been used since the inception of networking concept to improve library facilities. Though, Information Communication Technology ICT advancement has given the advantage of accessing information in networked environment through wide area network, but the applications of LANs are still relevant for the libraries. This paper gives a basic introduction of LANs and their usage in library and information science.
