Abstract

The digitisation of documents content and metadata of other than English language works is gaining importance as the need for multilingual access and retrieval is increasing all over the world, including India. This paper discusses the technical issues relating to UNICODE applications in digital libraries. The special emphasis is laid on standard codes especially for Indian languages although it has touched other languages like Thai, Hebrew etc. ASCII (The American Standard Code for Information Interchange) and ISCII (Indian Script Code for Information Interchange) are briefly mentioned. It has stressed on Unicode collation algorithm (UCA) as “a customizable method to compare two strings”. Finally, it has touched activities of digital libraries in an Indian environment.
