Invasive alien species: Problems and the way forward

Increased global trade in agriculture has an unwanted impact in the form of increased chances of the introduction of exotic pests. Papaya mealybug, coconut mite, serpentine leaf miner are the recent most examples of the vulnerability of Indian agriculture to the alien species. This paper takes stock of the situation and draws road map to strengthen quarantine mechanism in the country to prevent the entry of exotic pests. Building public awareness and enhanced coordination among various implementing agencies are considered as important requisites to protect Indian agriculture from invasive pest species.
