Assessing competitiveness of Indian gems and jewellery industry through revealed comparative advantage analysis

Abstract

Global demand for gems and jewellery has always been high. Gems and Jewellery and India is global supplier of Gems and jewellery to the world. Indian gems and jewellery industry has made a significant contribution to the world. India is leader in diamond processing. The industry is highly labour intensive and skill based. Adoption of advanced technology has further increased the performance of the sector. While India has high competence for diamond processing, it is also biggest consumer of gold and This categories of gems and jewellery products. Various methods for calculating the comparative advantage have been used. Secondary data from International Trade Center has been referred for calculating Revealed Comparative advantage. Further, the paper investigates the reasons for comparative advantage and strategies to increase the performance of gems and jewellery export.
