Antifungal Activity of Metal Complexes of 2-Hydroxybenzal-4-chloroaniline

Refluxing of 2-hydroxybenzal-4-chloroamline(l) with FeCl₃, (CH₃COO)₂Zn.2H₂O and CdCl₂, resulted in the formation of respective solid metal complexes (la-lc). On the basis of analytical data and IR studies, a 1:3 metal to ligand stoichiometry has been suggested for iron complexes, whereas 1:2 metal to ligand stoichiometry is given to zinc and cadmium complexes. The infra-red studies have also revealed that the ligands are coordinated to metal through phenolic oxygen and azomethine nitrogen The screening of these complexes against Curvularia lunata, Fusarium oxysporum and Alternaria alternata by spore germination inhibition technique have shown that cadmium complex (lc) is fungitoxic to all the test fungi having ED₅₍₎ values of 3 ppm against F. oxysporum.
