A study was undertaken in coastal areas of West Bengal during April 1999 - September 1999, and in Tamil Nadu during October 1999 - March 2000, to assess the level of pesticides in coastal water. In water samples collected from West Bengal, HCH and endosulfan were in the range of BDL-0.043 ug−1 and BDL - 0.067 ugL−1, respectively. Presence of only a-HCH in coastal waters indicated that there was no recent input of HCH to the coastal area. Other organochlorine pesticides such as DDT, endrin, aldrin and dieldrin were not detected. There was no pesticide contamination in the water samples collected from Tamil Nadu throughout the study period. Present level of pesticides in coastal water of West Bengal were within the safe permissible levels and appeared to be safe to the shrimp.
