Benzalnitromethane and its derivatives were synthesized by condensing substituted benzaldehydes with nitromethane. Compounds were characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, IR and mixed melting points. They were tested in vitro for their antifungal activity against Alternant alternata, Fusarium oxysporum, Colletotrichum capsici, Helminthosporium gramineum and Myrothecium roridum. Compound Va has been found to be quite effecttve against A. alternata with ED50 value of 150 ppm. whereas compound Vila has been found to possess promising activity against M. roridum with ED50 value of 70 ppm.
