Condensation of 2-chlorobenzalaniline with cyanoaceticacid (I) ethyl cyanoacetate (II) malononitrile (III)) nitromethane (IV), acetylacetone (V) and ethyl acetoacetate (VI) in the presence of a base resulted in the formation of products Ia-VIa. The compounds have been characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, melting point and spectral studies. The compounds were screened in vitro for their antifungal potential against Alternaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum, Myrothecium roridum and Ustilago tritici by spore germination inhibition method. 2-Chlorobenzalmalononitrile (IIIa) has been found to be most effective test compound againstt A. alternata and U. tritici with ED50 values of 290 and 280 μg mL−1, respectively. Three compounds Va, VIa and Ia have been found to possess promising potential against M. roridum with ED50 values of 75, 130 and 170 μg mL−1, respectively.
