Abstract

Iron complexes (Ia-IVa) were prepared by condensing ferric chloride with 2-hydroxybenzalaniline (I), 2-hydroxybenzala 2-chloroaniline (II), 2-hydroxybenzal-3-chloroaniline (III) and 2-hydroxybenzal-4-chloroaniline (IV), respectively, in 1:3 molar ratio. The complexes were characterized on the basis of elemental analysis and IR studies. On the basis of analytical data and infrared studies, it has been concluded that the ligand has linked through phenolic oxygen and coordinated through azomethine nitrogen. The Schiff bases I-IV and their iron complexes Ia-IVa were screened in vitro for their fungitoxicity against Altemaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum, Helminthosporium oryzae and Myrothecium roridum by spore germinatton inhibition technique. Iron complexes Ia-IVa have been found more effective against A. alternata, F. oxysporum and M. roridum compared to the respective 2-hydroxybenzalaniline and one of the complexes (IIIa) has ED50 value of 65 μg ml−1 against M. roridum.
