Abstract

Carbofuran, quinalphos and phorate are the most commonly used insecticides in the Nilgiris district to combat the soil pests, viz., cutworms, white grubs and nematodes infesting potato and crucifers. In the present study, the extent of soil contamination due to these insecticides was assessed in major vegetable growing areas. Carbofuran, quinalphos, phorate and fenvalerate residues were detected in 94.0, 70.2, 52.9 and 56.9% of the soil samples analysed.
