Abstract

The synthetic pyrethroid insecticides are an extremely useful class of products for controlling Heliothis sp. in cotton. Unfortunately, indiscriminate use can, and has, led to pest resistance. A staged strategy for using pyrethroids only during a specific period of peak squaring, flowering and boll formation with other pesticides and cultural practices being utilized to keep population down for the remainder of the cotton growing season, has been implemented with reasonable success in several parts of the world. A closer look at Australia and the USA, including recommendations and results, may be of value to those who are developing the pyrethroid resistance management strategies for India.
