Synthetic pyrethroids were introduced in India in 1980 by imports. Since then its use in the country has increased tremendously and the current annual consumption is rnore than a thousand tonnes. Currently the pyrethroids used are cypermethrin, fenvalerate and deltamethrin. Their injudicious use in agriculture has created problems in control of Heliothis armigera ami Plutella xylostella in which high degree of resistance has been established. There are indications that Spodoptera litura is also likely to become resistant. Field trials in public health sector show that the large scale usage may lead to resistance in the mosquito, Culex, There is a need to formulate strategy/strategies for pyrethroid resistant insect management.
