Eight quaternary ammonium salts (1a-d, 2a-d) were synthesized by condensing (3-N,N-diethylamino-2-hydroxypropyl) aryloxyethanoate (5a-d) with phenyl chloroethanoate and n-butyl chloroethanoate separately and their plant growth retardant activity was examined. Salts prepared with phenyl chloroethanoate (1a-d) showed pronounced growth retarding effect as compared with that of n-butyl chloroethanoate (2a-d), when tested on seeds of oryza sativa (PR-116). Compound 1a was found to be the most effective plant growth retardant among the eight synthesized compounds.
