Abstract

4-Dimethylaminobenzalanilines (I-IX) were synthesized by condensing 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde with aniline and substituted anilines in equimolar ratio. The synthesized compounds were characterized on the basis of elemental analysis and spectral studies and screened for their antifungal potential against Altemaria brassicae, Fusarium oxysporum and Myrothecium roridum by spore germination inhibition method. 4-Dimethylaminobenzal-4-phenetidine (IV) was found to possess promising activity against F. oxysporum with ED50 value of 85 μg ml−1. 4-Dimethylaminobenzal-4-nitroaniline (IX) was found to be most potent against A. brassicae and M. roridum with ED50 value of 50 and 65 μg ml−1 respectively.
