Abstract

Bacterial isolates used in the present study were recovered from pesticide contaminated soil of an experimental field of crop research centre of the university campus. Two isolates namely GBSP3 and GBSPF degraded lindane maximally under aerobic conditions and their tolerance level for lindane was 90 and 110 ppm respectively in minimal broth. Molecular characterization showed their sequence similarity with Gordonia sp (an actinomycetes). Lindane degradation was in the range of 83.3, 85.1 and 89.3% by GBSP3, GBSPF and consortium of GBSP3 and GBSPF, respectively in 30 d in soil under laboratory conditions. Bacterial consortium degraded >70% lindane in a pot experiment on spinach which lasted for 55 d.
