Abstract

A dynamic volatile collection system enabling sampling of volatiles from ten maize genotypes simultaneously under continuous air flow is reported. Analysis of the volatiles revealed that the monoterpene d-limonene was common in all maize genotypes, both in the healthy as well as spotted stem borer infested conditions. The specific induced volatile (3E)-4, 8-dimethyl-1, 3, 7-nonatriene (DMNT) is reported along with some linear alkanes which are suspected to be of the pest cuticular origin.
