Abstract

7-Hydroxy-4-methyl-2H-chromen-2-one (I) and its ten acyl derivatives were synthesized by Pechmann condensation reaction of resorcinol with ethyl acetoacetate by using sulphuric and polyphosphoric acids, which on further reaction with different substituted organic acids in the presence of 15 per cent NaOH afforded different esters (II-XI). The compounds were characterized based on the physical data (yield, melting point, physical state, and colour) and their structures established by UV-Visible, IR and 1H-NMR. The compounds were evaluated for their antifungal activity against Fusarium moniliforme and Macrophomina phaseolina by poisoned food technique. Mono chloro substituted (VI) and tri-fluoro (VIII) ester derivative were the most active against both the fungi. All the test compounds were less effective than the reference carbendazim 50 WP.
