Abstract

Malathion contamination in feed decreased the weights of broilers, total protein, globulin, globulin-γ, T3 and T4 hormones, and IgA, IgG and IgM immunoglobulins. It increased the liver weight, ALP, AST, urea, total lipids, triglycerides, cholesterol, albumin to globulin ratio, and globulin-β. Supplementing the feed with 1 per cent Sonchus oleraceus did not affect the broilers’ live or total weights but enhanced the birds’ biochemical and biological activity via increased total proteins, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant capacity and decreased total lipids content, cholesterol, triglycerides, T3 and T4 hormones, and IgA, IgG, and IgM immunoglobulins due to its richness in hydrocarbon, aldehyde, ketone, diterpene and triterpene compounds. The results highlight the ability of this weed plant in countering the adverse effects of malathion on hematology, hepatic, renal, immunological and hormonal biochemical parameters in plasma and serum of broilers.
