The cytogenotoxic effects of cypermethrin on bone marrow cells and lymphocytes of Wistar rats are reported. During four weeks of experimentation, cypermethrin admistration at 1/25th and 1/50th of LD50 by oral intubation showed a dose-dependent increase in the frequency of sister chromatid exchange (SCEs) and micro-nucleated cells. A dose dependent increase in chromosomal aberrations like fragmentation, breakage and gaps in all the treated rats was ovserved. Increased tail length of lymphocytic comets in treated rats revealed that chronic exposure of cypermethrin resulted in carcinogenic and mutagenic effects.
