Abstract

We are living in the world which is still confronting to the three major issues, namely poverty and hunger, quality primary education and environmental sustainability of development programmes. To every country, it has its own circumstances, conditions and resources to confront these three issues. In recent past, the hills were crowded, and the population load in the hills had increased. As scarcity of water in the hills is a very common phenomenon, therefore, some wise and pragmatic approaches must be adopted for the sustainable development. Among the recent trends of sustainable development, eco-san seems to be a solution for the conservation of water and improvement of soil health in hilly terrains. As far as India is concerned, the concept of eco-san has been introduced and been tried for Western Ghats and coastal areas, and the application of it in hilly terrain is yet to be explored.
