A survey done in 1990, the municipality of Almora and its adjoining areas had total 99 water bodies. But over the last century and a half, the number of springs has declined 360 to 60. ‘Naulas and Dharas’ need to be revived as soon as possible if the water supply for the fast enhancing population has to be sustained They are as much a part of the socio-cultural ethos of Kumaun as other symbols and rituals.
