Abstract

Though India, an old civilization and land of diversity and celebrations is known for its vibrant culture and rich heritage, seldom its cultural institutions find a place of mention and discussion in the mainstream and general discourse of the nation or in public opinion. Cultural institutions with a few exceptions used to be formed and supported by Governments of various types and levels such as Central, State and Local till the advent of post liberal economy and governance of India. As with many sectors opened for private participation, those interested and involved in the fields of arts, crafts saw a need and opportunity for the inception of a new category of cultural institution both in form and character. This article explores nuances and novelty of two such exceptional institutions locate d in Western and Southern parts of India. They are different in their themes but have a commonality of association with the local communities. One is the Living and Learning Design Centre - deals in tangible heritage (crafts) and the second Kalkeri Sangeet Vidyalay - about intangible heritage (music).
