An Analytical Study Regarding the Application of ‘Ergonomics’ in the Library of the St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission College, Kolkata

Abstract

St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission College is a general degree college that contains the traditional heritage of Kolkata city and has completed its 159-year journey on 1st January 2024. The unique collection of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) is the principal characteristic feature of the college library. The marvellous furniture of the library is an added attraction of the college, and that furniture is a symbol of Gothic sculpture. Ergonomics is a branch of science, and it is actually part and parcel of bio-mechanics or human engineering. Library ergonomics is a science that deals with designing and arranging tables, chairs, and other furniture so that users and staff can use them easily and safely. Maintaining proper ergonomics is very important because it prevents injury, promotes physical and mental wellness, and increases work productivity. This article is an analytical study about the application of ergonomics in the library of St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission College, Kolkata. Data about the furniture have been collected from the students, teachers, and staff members of the college through questionnaires and interviews. On the basis of the answers of the users, data have been analyzed in tabular form. Finally, after analyzing the data and observing facts and sub-facts, the conclusion has been drawn, and the research paper is the outcome. This research article is the sequel to the primary research regarding the application of ergonomics in the library of St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission College, Kolkata, in a pinpointed manner.
