Abstract

This paper examines how the native religions were degraded under colonial regimes and how their social structures and ceremonies were dismantled in the process. The colonial governments took the help of many agencies to prove that the religious systems of the natives and their affiliated cultures were inferior to the superior European culture. The paper argues that the native cultures were not only environment friendly, but also tolerant. The paper illustrates that the current problems like environmental degradation and religious intolerance is a result of the dismantling of these structures.
