Abstract

The concept of NGOs is about 3025 years old. NGOs work with a feeling of humanity. Since the last two decades, empowerment of backward people, women and children has been the main issue of both GOs and NGOs. In the Uttarakhand state, many NGOs are working in the field of women empowerment. Hence, the main purpose of this study is to find the impact of NGO programmes on women in different dimensions of empowerment.

It is found that NGOs working in the Nainital district have started awareness programmes and functional literacy programmes. They have all motivated women to form self-help groups. A significant difference is found between literate women residing in NGO-covered areas and literate women residing in NGO non-covered areas in different dimensions of empowerment like confidence level, legal awareness, health awareness and political awareness. Hence, it is to be said that NGOs are helpful in women empowerment in the Kumaon region.
