‡This paper is a culmination of the study and report of Group Project Activity carried out by the authors, and submitted to UGC –ASC, Kumaon University, Nainital in the Summer School in Environmental Concerns in India during 22nd to 11th May 2013.
Well-organized provision of community services and infrastructure are critical issues for local self-governing organization like municipalities in most developing cities of India. Solid waste has turn out to be the main concern. Solid Waste Management (SWM) is expensive and complex system for local self-governing organizations as it is directly concerned with the health, environment and quality of life of the local people. Incorrect waste collection practices and improper solid waste disposal can pose a serious hazard of local disease outbreak, water source pollution and greenhouse gases.
This paper describes the present scenario of the SWM practices carried out in the Nainital – the most popular hill station in North India. It also describes the method and practices followed by the citizen of Nainital, Nainital Muncipal Council and A2Z group- the organization working for solid waste collection, transportation, treatment and disposal methodology adopted in Nainital.
