Abstract

Several countries have been thinking about introducing training programmes for improving the quality in higher education. However, it is only in India that a compulsory training programme for university/college teachers has been introduced. The present paper investigates the effectiveness of training programmes being organised by Academic Staff Colleges. The programmes were found to be useful and effective by the trainees, and they found positive impact on their personality. However, for some of the things learnt in these programmes, the participants had reservations about the possibility of implementation when they go back to their parent institutions. Programmes of shorter duration may be preferred as compared to three- to four-week programmes at present. Further improvement in the infrastructural facilities may be helpful in further improving the learning environment in Academic Staff Colleges. The present study may be helpful for policy makers who are planning for training of higher education teachers.
