Abstract

The importance of English cannot be ignored since it is the most common language and the ability to use it effectively has become essential in today's fast-growing world. The emphasis on grammar rather than conversation, the inability of the English teachers to speak English in the classroom, adaptation of bilingual language for teaching language in the classroom, current examination system that emphasises rote memorisation instead of acquisition of analytical and creative skills, lack of adequate practice given to students – are some of the reasons why English is not spoken by students adequately.

The present paper proposes to critically analyse the problems faced by second language learners as well as teachers in language classroom and also suggests tasks and activities making English language effective, interesting and enjoyable.
