Abstract

This biological diversity and the natural heritage of the Indian subcontinent were considered as nature's gifts and protected by our ancestors. The Indian tradition of love, respect and reverence for nature could be traced back to the Manu's laws, the Vedas, the Puranas, Buddhism, Jainism and others. Historically, conservation was an ardent article of faith in India. Environmental values are important and integral parts of our cultural heritage.
