Abstract

Heritage – immovable and movable; tangible and intangible; cultural and natural; built and industrial – has been a matter of interest and curiosity to humanity for long. With the passage of time there has been growing awareness, understanding, appreciation and concern of matters related to heritage. There is a need to spread this information about matters of heritage through various agencies such as museums and others to the general public for their consumption and utility. Collections consisting of artefacts and other items of cultural heritage value belonging to every community can be found in museums, historical societies, archives and libraries. These items include tools, household utensils, farm and industrial equipment, ritural objects, toys, ornaments, family and land records, photographs, maps, furniture, artwork and the artefacts and other documentation recovered from archaeological sites and specimens of nature collected through filed work and explorations. Museum by definition and character is uniquely endowed with attributes to inform, explain and promote heritage, and aid in its appreciation and protection.
