It is well established that obesity is related to a number of comorbid health conditions which lead to disability and early death. Physical, psychological and neurological consequences of obesity and comorbid conditions are well explored; however, its cognitive effects are poorly understood. Recent studies have suggested that overweight and obesity lead to cognitive decline and can affect cognitive functioning. Although a number of theories and hypotheses explain the mechanisms through which obesity negatively affects cognitive functions, the exact mechanism is still unknown. However, it has been argued that such cognitive dysfunctions might trigger further progression of obesity. Understanding of this bidirectional interaction of obesity and cognitive dysfunctions should help prevent and treat obesity. Thus, the present paper addresses the issues related to obesity and cognitive dysfunction.
