Abstract

The objective of the present is study is to determine the effect of emotional intelligence and adjustment on behavioural problems among students of higher secondary schools. Emotional intelligence is the capacity of an individual to be aware, control and express emotions effectively. As a child makes a transition from elementary school to a high school, it forms a crucial point in determining his level of academic adjustment. Therefore, emotional intelligence is a key element for facing such adjustments with success and a failure to adjust may exhibit problems causing harm to the well-being. For this study, a sample of 240 higher secondary school students was drawn and studied using standardised tools such as, EIS, AISS, and YPI. A three-way ANOVA was carried out in order to test the proposed hypotheses. Results revealed significant interaction effect of emotional intelligence, adjustment, and gender on behavioural problems among higher secondary school students. The obtained findings suggest that a child's emotional intelligence enables him to work and adjust smoothly by taking challenges of the school environment by reducing behavioural problems arising due to maladjustment.
