Effects of Metacognitive Awareness, Self-efficacy and Goal Orientations on Programming Performance of Software Professionals

Abstract

The present study was conducted to explore the effect of metacognitive awareness, self-efficacy and goal orientation on the programming performance of software developers. A total of sixty-five software professionals between the agerange of 21 to 25 years were administered an online survey that included measures of metacognitive awareness, programming self-efficacy, goal orientations and programming performance along with a few other questions to assess their demographic details. Results of the study revealed a significant positive effect of regulation of cognition dimension of metacognitive awareness and task goal orientations on programming performance. Also ability-avoid goal orientations are found to be negatively impacting the programming performance. No significant effects of knowledge of cognition dimension of metacognitive awareness, selfefficacy and ability-approach goal orientations are found on programming performance. These results suggest that participants ’ability to regulate their cognition and their goal orientations significantly affect their programming performances.
