Every individual has his own perspective to manage emotions. Emotional regulation is an emulsification of internal and external processes which are vital in monitoring, evaluating and changing emotional reactions. Emotional regulation has two major strategies of reappraisal and suppression. Gross (1999) has suggested that emotional regulation can be how individuals regulate the emotional experiences of others or how they regulate their own emotions. Cognitive reappraisal involves how a person thinks about an emotion eliciting situation whereas suppression involves a reduction in the emotion expressive behavior. Literature has suggested how attachments enable us to regulate our emotions. Also, the self construal plays an important role in the domain of emotionality. In this study an effort has also been made to study the role of personality in predicting emotional regulation. The sample consists of 80 females of the age group of 18–22 years. Data was obtained by administering Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Generalized Self Efficacy Scale, EPI and Inventory of Parent and Peer Relationships. The results are elucidated according to the values of regression coefficients. The implications of this study are that emotional regulation plays a pivotal role in early adulthood stage and contributes to mental health and emotional wellbeing. This enables them to live a balanced life. The counselors can also utilize various regulation strategies with their clients for their healthy development.
