Efficacy of Yoga Therapy in Managing Neurotic Patients

Abstract

The present study is an attempt to examine the effectiveness of Yoga on patients with neurotic disorders. 120 patients between age group of 18–65 years diagnosed with neurotic disorders by psychiatrist, were randomly selected from the Out patient Department of M. B. Hospital, R N T Medical College, Udaipur (Raj.) Hamilton Anxiety Scale. (HAM-A) was administered to measure the severity of anxiety. Acute Panic Inventory [API] was used to assess the severity of panic symptoms by individual during severe panic anxiety. The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) was administered to assess the range of social interaction and performance situations feared by a patient in order to check in the diagnosis of social anxiety disorder. The t-test was applied to assess the significance of observations of patient. The results of t-test showed that, there is significant observation, that Yoga therapy was found to be effective in the management of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, panic anxiety disorder, phobic anxiety disorder and mixed neurotic disorder (dissociative disorders, somatoform disorders, stress and adjustment disorders). Improvement was observed in patient's positive emotional state with subjective reporting of decreased levels of anxiety and a better mental and physical function after yogic practices.
