Social Capital as Predictors of Village Level Development

Abstract

Four hundred households drawn from four villages of Bihar (India) participated in this study to determine the facets of social capital predicting the indicators of village level development. The findings revealed that economic, prestige, education indicators of village level development were significantly predicted by social capital factors such as social cohesiveness and cooperation. Improvement in the health of the villagers was mainly predicted by social capital factor such as acceptance of system. The law and order situation at the village level development was greatly predicted and selfishness and cooperation and negatively predicted by social cohesiveness factor of social capital.
