Role of Physical Appearance in Self-Esteem and Interpersonal Communication among Adolescents

Abstract

This paper deals with the role of physical appearance and gender in selfesteem and interpersonal communication of adolescents and the relationship of physical appearance, self-esteem and interpersonal communication. 160 adolescents (males and females) with age range from 16 to 25 years drawn using purposive sampling technique participated in the study. Data were collected using Socio-cultural Attitudes towards Appearance Questionnaire-4, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Interpersonal Communication Inventory. The findings showed that there was a significant difference of level of physical appearance and significant difference of gender on self-esteem of adolescents. A significant difference of level of physical appearance on interpersonal communication of adolescent was also found. There was a negative correlation between physical appearance and self-esteem as well as between physical appearance and interpersonal communication whereas a positive correlation between self-esteem and interpersonal communication among adolescents.
