Application of projective techniques in clinical psychology began in the early 20th century. These tests permit subjects to express thoughts and feelings which are difficult to access by direct and structured questioning and hence are being used widely. The reliance on such techniques in clinical settings is huge, thus their discussion seems pertinent. The author explores the history and evolution of these tests and different classifications of these by different authors. Further, the current status in terms of their reliability and validity in various areas of Clinical Psychology are discussed. Finally, some issues regarding their ethical use, and terminology are elaborated upon with suggestions for wise and relevant use.
