Abstract

A trained counsellor applies different techniques that he/she acquired through academic learning to make the intervention effective. In addition to these, Counsellors must have acquired certain Counselling skills through training and experiences. Studies have been conducted to assess the efficacy or effectiveness of counselling to different target groups and for different problems. There are a set of well-known and accepted skills that must be acquired by a professional to perform counselling process effectively or to make oneself competent. This study analyses 5 of the selected major counseling skills viz. Communication skills, Empathy, Non-Judgmental Positive Regard, Problem solving skill and Self-awareness of Family Counselors(N=9) in Kerala assessed by Counselling skill index questionnaire and examined using Anova test whether there is any significant match or comparison between the levels of same skills among Counsellors. The limitations of this study are further discussed and future research areas are also suggested.
