Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between emotional labour and occupational stress and to examine the influence of emotional labour on occupational stress. 222 questionnaires were distributed to Management and Commerce teaching under graduate faculty of colleges affiliated to Bangalore University and autonomous colleges, out of which 218 were completed and considered for the study with a response rate of 98%. A Purposive Sampling method was used. A Qualitative study was done for further clarity on emotional labour and occupational stress. 6 out of 10 respondents participated and were interviewed with five open ended questions. The results showed there is no significant relationship between emotional labour dimensions and occupational stress. Further it was also revealed that emotional labour dimensions do not significantly influence occupational stress. The result of this study contradict with the result of previous studies and hence further research should be conducted with different domain where the use of emotional labour is most intense. It was found in qualitative analysis that there were various reasons that influence occupational stress other than emotional labour.
